A phytosociological analysis and synopsis of the dry woodlands and succulent vegetation of the Peruvian Andes Anais da ABC (AABC)
GALÁN-DE-MERA,ANTONIO; SÁNCHEZ-VEGA,ISIDORO; LINARES-PEREA,ELIANA; CAMPOS,JOSÉ; MONTOYA,JUAN; VICENTE-ORELLANA,JOSÉ A..
ABSTRACT A phytosociological approach to dry forest and cactus communities on the occidental slopes of the Peruvian Andes is presented in base of 164 plots carried out following the Braun-Blanquet method. From them, 52 have been made recently, and the other 112 were taken from the literature. After a multivariate analysis, using a hierarchical clustering and a detendred correspondence analysis, the Acacio-Prosopidetea class (dry forest and cactus communities, developed on soils with some edaphic humidity or precipitations derived from El Niño Current), the Opuntietea sphaericae class (cactus communities of central and southern Peru, on few stabilized rocky or sandy soils) and the Carico-Caesalpinietea class (dry forests of the Peruvian coastal desert,...

Ethnobotany of native cacti in the northeast region of Brazil: can traditional use influence availability? Acta Botanica
Lima-Nascimento,Ailza Maria de; Bento-Silva,José Severino; Lucena,Camilla Marques de; Lucena,Reinaldo Farias Paiva de.
ABSTRACT Documenting the uses of native species of Cactaceae in Northeast Brazil contributes to understanding how the inhabitants of this seasonally dry and low-rainfall region have used these resources, considering that some species of this family of Cactaceae are among the most endangered in the world. The aim of this research was to determine which species of Cactaceae occur in the study area and investigate the knowledge and recurrent uses associated with them, as well as the local availability of the species most used by residents. Ethnobotanical data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 59 heads of households. Guided tours were conducted for data collection and subsequent taxonomic identification of species. Use value and...

Functional antagonism between nitrogen-fixing leguminous trees and calcicole-drought-tolerant trees in the Cerrado Acta Botanica
Meira-Neto,João Augusto Alves; Tolentino,Gláucia Soares; Silva,Maria Carolina Nunes Alves da; Neri,Andreza Viana; Gastauer,Markus; Magnago,Luiz Fernando Silva; Yuste,Jorge Curiel; Valladares,Fernando.
ABSTRACT The Cerrado is the largest savanna of South America and its physiognomy varies from savanna to woodlands. There are two main types of woodlands in the Cerrado: dystrophic woodlands, dominated by N-fixing leguminous trees (LEG), and mesotrophic woodlands dominated by non-leguminous drought-tolerant trees (DRY), which are calcicoles and sensitive to Al3+. The working hypothesis is that LEG and DRY are functional antagonists in terms of the acidification/alkalization processes involving different forms of inorganic nitrogen and pH, Ca2+ and Al3+ in soil. Tree species basal area and soil properties were used to investigate the antagonism between LEG and DRY using generalized linear models. The results suggest that LEG and DRY are antagonists. The LEG...

The use of firewood in protected forests: collection practices and analysis of legal restrictions to extractivism Acta Botanica
Nascimento,Luciana Gomes de Sousa; Ramos,Marcelo Alves; Albuquerque,Ulysses Paulino; Araújo,Elcida de Lima.
ABSTRACT Restrictions to the collection of timber resources in protected areas have been scarcely studied. The aim of this study was to describe the practices of firewood collection in a protected forest and the perceptions of collectors, particularly with regard to their adjustment to the rules of the local management plan. The study involved 102 participants of a rural community adjacent to the Araripe National Forest and employed semi-structured interviews, free-listing and in-situ survey techniques for ethnobiological data collection. The volume of wood stored was measured and monitored using a modification of the weight survey technique. The residents used 69 plant species for firewood Most of the informants self-reported disagreement with the rules...

Caracterização ambiental do Semiárido brasileiro; Capítulo 2. Caracterização botânica e biologia reprodutiva; Capítulo 3. Recursos genéticos; Capítulo 4. Ecofisiologia; Capítulo...
